Certificate III students gathered this week at Glenelg Golf Course to complete their practical assessments for the term. The week began with windy weather, though thankfully there was very little rain.
On Monday and Tuesday, Stage 1 students undertook assessments for the units AHCWHS302: Contribute to work health and safety processes, ACMGEN315: Communicate effectively with clients and team members, and AHCMOM304: Operate machinery and equipment. Their tasks included participating in a board meeting, demonstrating manual handling techniques, interpreting Safety Data Sheets (SDS), completing risk assessments and pre-start checks, and operating a variety of machinery and equipment. Students also observed a reel sharpening demonstration by course mechanic Tim Cowen, which provided valuable insight into the maintenance required to achieve the high standards of turf cutting.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Stage 2 students completed their practical assessments for the units AHCPMG301: Control weeds and AHCPMG302: Control plant pests, diseases and disorders. As part of these assessments, students monitored several areas across the golf course for the presence of weeds, insect and pests. They used a variety of techniques including soil testing, sticky traps, and turf rinsing to assist in their observations. Their work also involved interpreting product labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS), as well as performing calibrations for both knapsack sprayers and boom sprayers.
Throughout the four days, Stage 3 students completed practical assessments based on the units AHCTRF307 Construct turf playing surfaces, AHCDRG305: Install drainage systems, and AHCIRG345: Install pressurised irrigation systems. Their work involved a range of tasks including surveying, excavation, and levelling, as well as the installation of irrigation systems, drainage infrastructure, and turf sod.
We would like to thank Tim Warren and his team at Glenelg Golf Course for their hospitality and support throughout the week.
