The R & A and ASTMA Scholarship

As part of our continued focus on education, the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association is pleased to announce the continuation of its partnership with the R&A to extend the offering of The R&A Greenkeeping Scholarship to Sports Turf Management students across Australia for 2021/2022. 

The 2021/2022 Scholarship Programme

The Scholarship not only provides a financial contribution towards the costs of higher level education, the program also provide students with some unique Turf Management opportunities including assisting the course team during The Open Championship, join the stadium grounds operations at events throughout Australia, be part of the preparations for various domestic and European Tour events, and access networking opportunities with current and past R&A Greenkeeping scholars around the globe.

The decision to award a scholarship to Sports Turf Management students is based on a number of criteria including academic performance, career aspirations, extra-curricular activities and industry engagement along with individual circumstances

About the Scholarship Programme 

The R&A Scholarship started in 2004 with single Chinese Scholar at Elmwood College.  Prior to 2019, Myerscough College (England) and SRUC Elmwood (Scotland) were the only education establishments where Scholarships are awarded. 

Now the R&A are proudly establishing a Greenkeeping Scholarship Programme in Australia in conjunction with the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association. 

In 2021 / 2022, the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association is additionally supporting education, through the offering of a Scholarships Program to Sportsfield & Grounds students, to compliment the R&A offering to students employed at Golf Courses.

The programme to date has assisted:

  • Supporting 321 Scholars
  • Reciepients at Myerscough College (England) and SRUC Elmwood (Scotland) hailed from over 30 countries
  • Education Scholarship investment to date is over £860,000 
     

The R&A Scholarship Provides

Financial Assistance
The Scholarship provides a financial contribution towards the costs of higher level education, but the programme has evolved to provide students with some unique opportunities

Tournament Experience
In the UK, in addition to opportunities to assist the greenkeeping team in the run up to, and during, The Open Championship, scholars are offered the opportunity to assist the greenkeeping teams at various European Tour events

These opportunities are currently being developed within Australia into 2021/22, however will cover an extended range of opportunities including Sportsfields & Grounds, Golf Course Management and Stadium event experience

Networking
Access to dedicated digital communications platforms shared by current and past R&A greenkeeping scholars around the globe
 

Scholarship Application Process

A range of individual scholarships will be offered to Golf Course Management and Sportsfield & Grounds students studying either AHC51019 - Diploma of Sports Turf Management or Bachelor of Agriculture and Technology (Sports Turf Science and Management).

Selection

The selection process for the programme takes place annually, consisting of a process of:

  • Complete and submit an Application form
  • Attend a Scholarship Interview 
  • Candidate feedback 
  • Prior assignment / academic results 
Decision

The decision to award a scholarship is based on a number of criteria including:

  • Academic performance
  • Career aspirations
  • Extra-curricular activities
  • Industry involvement, engagement, memberships
  • Individual situation
     
Scolarship Application Criteria

To apply for the scholarship the following criteria have to be met:

  • Students who apply must be actively engaged in the Sports Turf Management industry
  • Scholarship applicants must be a member of the Australian Sports Turf Managers Assocaition
  • Applicants must be enrolled or intendeing to commence  AHC51019 - Diploma of Sports Turf Management in 2022 or the Bachelor of Agriculture and Technology (Sports Turf Science and Management)
  • Scholarships are open to students studying AHC51019 - Diploma of Sports Turf Management or Bachelors Degree (Sports Turf Science and Management) at any institute in Australia.
  • Applicants must successfully pass the application and interview process.
     

The Scholarship is designed to help the recipient meet the costs of tuition, accommodation or other resources required to help them through their studies, and can be used towards tuition, their placement year or to help further a research or specialist project as part of their studies.  If successful scholarship funds will be paid upon completion of units.
