EXCITING NEW ADDITION: HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SEVEN MILE BEACH GOLF COURSE IN HOBART TO FULLY OPEN IN DECEMBER

Thursday 23, Oct 2025

The full opening of 18 holes at Seven Mile Beach (pictured above) in Hobart is just over a month away, with the highly anticipated new links course set to dominate the Tasmanian golfing scene for generations to come.

The new course is now taking bookings on the club’s website from December 4 for the general public after a long and arduous lobbying and construction process spanning nearly 15 years.

Seven Mile Beach Golf Course, located on a prized piece of land only minutes from Hobart Airport and Royal Hobart, was founded by Tasmanian professional golfer Mat Goggin, who grew up on the sand dunes surrounding the new course with great mate and seasoned turf manager Anthony Toogood (pictured right) - who also grew up just minutes away - the first superintendent on the site after taking on the role in 2021 when construction began.

The South course, designed and shaped by American Mike DeVries, with assistance from design firm partner Michael Clayton, is expected to welcome in a major influx of golfing enthusiasts from all over the world.

Toogood - son of former Australian amateur golfer Peter (AM, MBE) -  currently has a crew of seven full-time and three-part time staff working on the site with hopes it will expand, particularly with the construction of a second course. Seven Mile Beach is working on a North Course, which is set to open in 2027 and will advance the links course to 36 holes, creating two world-class courses each with its own character.

Eleven holes are currently open to play with speculation that the course could quickly surge up the top 100 world rankings and potentially host an Australian Open in the future - which would be the first time in Tasmania since Royal Hobart hosted the tournament in 1971.

For an in-depth feature and interview with superintendent Anthony Toogood on the latest exciting addition to the Australian golfing scene, keep your eyes on the next edition of the Australian Turfgrass Management Journal which details the tribes and tribulations of getting the course from a vision to reality.
