Women in Turf Strategy - Work Experience Programs

Launched in 2022, the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) Women in Turf Strategy is a program intended to addresses the key actions necessary to increase the representation of women in the sports turf management industry.

The Women in Turf Strategy is designed to establish a framework for the target areas of talent attraction, in pioneering new and innovative ways to increase participation of women seeking a career in Sports Turf Management, and talent retention, through the advancement of vocational and experience opportunities to develop skilled and qualified workers through a series of pathway and support initiatives.  A key pillar of the Strategy, is the development of Work Experience Programs, providing learning and experience opportunities for female sports turf managers at a range of events, venues and activities throughout Australia.

Work Experience Programs

Targeted to support learning and develop for next generation of female leaders, experience programs are available to support female sports turf managers in accessing volunteer work placement opportunities to further develop their skills, knowledge and experience in turf management and leadership in areas including:

  • Throughout the year, the Australian Sports Turf Managers Association will arrange a series of volunteer work placement opportunities at facilities within Australia and overseas, for female sports turf managers to apply to attend. 
  • Work placement opportunities will consist of a structed program, between 2 and 5 days volunteering experience working at a facility, supervised and supported by a leading sports turf manager.  
  • The variety of turf facilities included in the program will cover: Racetracks, golf courses, stadiums, council recreation reserves, lawn tennis, bowling greens and comparable sports & recreation facilities, and may include standard operations, tournament or significant event preparation

Women in Turf: Volunteer Placement Program - The Australian Open 2024

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the seventh (7th) Work Experience Programs under the Women in Turf Strategy – The Australian Open at Kingston Heath Golf Club.

The Women in Turf Program has an opportunity for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to travel to Melbourne and assist in the preparation for the Australian Open at the iconic Kingston Heath Golf Club on Melbourne’s world-famous sandbelt.

The ASTMA is offering four female turf managers the opportunity to travel to Melbourne from the Sunday 24th November to Sunday 1st December 2024, and support Kingston Health Golf Club Superintendent Hayden Mead and his team in preparing the turf for The Australian Open, played at the Grange from the 28th November to 1st December. 

Applications to support the Kingston Heath course management team are open to Qualified female sports turf managers or female Apprentices - no golf course experience required as applications are open to women and girls working in any area of the turf industry, including Golf Courses, Sportsfields & Grounds, Racetracks, Lawn Tennis, Councils, Bowls and others.

Program Information

  • The ASTMA will cover all costs for return flights plus accommodation for volunteers for the duration of the placement at Kingston Heath GC
  • This includes covering accommodation costs for Melbourne based volunteers (if necessary)
  • Kingston Heath Golf Club and representatives will induct volunteers and provide on-site support and liaison for job tasks & roles
  • Up to four (4) female sports turf managers will be selected to be part of the Australian Open work placement Program at Kingston Heath
  • As the 2024 Australian Open is being hosted at multiple venues, some work may be required at Victoria Golf Club Up – to be determined by host Superintendents (all transfers provided)

Women in Turf: Volunteer Placement Program - LIV Adelaide 2024

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the sixth (6th) of its Work Experience Programs under the Women in Turf Strategy - an opportunity for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to travel to Adelaide and assist in the preparation for the LIV showcase event – LIV Adelaide 2024 – at world-renowned The Grange Golf Club.

The ASTMA is offering four (4) female turf managers the opportunity to travel to Adelaide from the 21st April to the 28th April 2024, and support Grange Golf Club Rowan Daymond and his team in preparing the course ahead of and during LIV Adelaide, which will be played at the Grange from the 26th to 28th April. 

All flights and accomodation will be covered by the ASTMA and volunteers will be provided with tournament uniform and meals whilst on site.

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the fifth Work Experience and Placement Programs under the Women in Turf Strategy.

The ASTMA, in conjunction with the Australian Golf Club, have an opportunity for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to aid in the preparation of the Australian Golf Club course ahead of, and during, the 106th Australian Open in New South Wales. 

The Australian Open is the oldest and most prestigious golf tournament on the PGA Tour of Australasia, but without continued volunteer interest and support, it would not be possible to achieve the traditionally high standards that we have all come to expect.

We are optimistic that with your enthusiasm and commitment, we will create another extraordinary Australian Open!  

Applicants must be available on the following dates and times:

  • Saturday 25th November – Saturday 2nd December – AM & PM
  • Sunday 3rd December – AM (with an optional evening celebration)

All volunteers will be provided with tournament uniform and meals whilst on site.

Women in Turf: Volunteer Placement Program - FIFA Women's World Cup™, Victoria

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) in partnership with John Deere & Brandt AU, are delighted to announce the fourth Work Experience and Placement Programs under the Women in Turf Strategy.

The ASTMA, John Deere & Brandt AU, in conjunction with Melbourne Olympic Park Trust & AAMI Park, have an opportunity for up to nine (9) female sports turf managers to aid in the preparation of playing surfaces at AAMI Park for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup™.

Taking place every 4 years, the FIFA Women's World Cup™ sees 32 nations compete on the international stage across Australia and New Zealand, with the competition running from 20 July 2023 through to the final exactly a month later on 20 August 2023. 

With continental qualification pathways leading to an exciting finals event, this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on 20 July 2023 with co-hosts New Zealand taking on Norway.

John Deere & Brandt AU will select 3 Victorian female sports turf professionals in conjunction with the ASTMA offering up to an additional six (6) Victorian female turf managers the opportunity to aid in the preparation of playing surfaces at AAMI Park across event days in July and August 2023.  

With the schedule of World Cup games slated for AAMI Park commencing on Friday 21st July with Nigeria taking on Canada, and running through to the final Round of 16 game on Tuesday 8 August 2023, the ASTMA have several opportunities available for turf managers to get involved in this historic event. 

Applications will be conducted in date groups, to ensure a variety of learning and experience opportunities are available, in addition to working to prepare venue and playing surfaces for a minimum of two FIFA World Cup matches.

Program Information

    • Interstate turf managers are welcome to apply, however will be responsible for their own flights and accomodation costs for the duration of the program (Refer Point 1)
  • AAMI Park and MOPT representatives will induct volunteers and provide on-site support and liaison for job tasks & roles
  • Applicants are able to nominate for multiple groups (example group 1 and group 3) based on their availability, or nominate for inclusion in all dates based on their availability.

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the third of its Work Experience Programs under the Women in Turf Strategy - an opportunity for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to travel to Melbourne and assist in the preparation for the WPGA showcase event – The Athena 2023 – at Sandringham Golf Links on Melbourne’s famous sandbelt.

The ASTMA is offering up to four (4) female turf managers the opportunity to travel to Melbourne from the 1st March to the 6th March, and support Sandringham Superintendent Geraldine O’Callaghan in preparing the course for The Athena, a compact two-day WPGA event, will be played at the re-designed Sandringham Links on the 4th and 5th March 2023.

In conjunction with Sandringham Links and the WPGA, an opportunity is available for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to travel to Melbourne to assist in preparation for the WPGA event.

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the second of it's Work Experience Programs, to be held in Hobart, Tasmania from Tuesday 1st November to Monday 7th November (inclusive).

In conjunction with Cricket Tasmania and Blundstone Arena, an opportunity is available for two (2) female sports turf managers to travel to Hobart and assist in the ground operations and preparation for the historic Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) hub, featuring 5 Big Bash League games played at Blundstone Arena across 5 day.

AFLW Grounds Management Program - Adelaide Oval

The Australian Sports Turf Managers Association (ASTMA) is delighted to announce the first of it's Work Experience Programs, to be held in Adelaide from Tuesday 27th September to Saturday 1st October (inclusive).

In conjunction with Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority, an opportunity is available for up to four (4) female sports turf managers to travel to Adelaide and assist in the ground operations and preparation for the historic first-ever AFL Women’s Showdown live at Adelaide Oval when Port Adelaide take on the Adelaide Crows on Friday 30 September 2022.
