VALE RICK PULLMAN

Monday 13, Oct 2025

ASTMA Bronze Partner Advanced Seed lost one of its own last weekend following the sad passing of former national sales manager Rick Pullman (pictured). The Melbourne-based 40-year turf industry veteran, who had just turned 72 a week earlier, died on Saturday 11 October after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Pullman’s initial years in the industry were spent with Brunnings before he joined Turf and Irrigation. Starting as a local sales representative, Pullman moved into managing sales at a national level before ultimately becoming manager of the business.

Following his time at Turf and Irrigation he went across to help Brian Hinman at Campbellfield-based Advanced Seed in a sales role, rising to be national sales manager which he excelled at up until his retirement in March 2020. Together with Hinman and Advanced Seed CEO Mick Ahern, the trio worked together for more than 35 years.

“Rick was a very kind and compassionate person who loved his job and loved people,” says current Advanced Seed national sales manager Matt Scott. “He was always happy and never talked badly about anyone. He was a true gentleman who will be sadly missed.”

Pullman had a deep passion for both football and cricket. He was a diehard Melbourne Football Club supporter and took great delight in watching them win the 2021 AFL Premiership, albeit over in Perth due to the COVID pandemic and lockdowns impacting Victoria at the time. He also played an instrumental role at the McKinnon Cricket Club in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs across many years.

Having begun his playing career with the club as an eight-year-old, Pullman would go on to be part of McKinnon’s only victorious Senior Division Premiership team in the 1980-81 season. After his playing days, he continued his involvement with the club, being a committee member, club president, junior cricket coordinator and coach. After more than 20 years’ service to the club, Pullman was bestowed life membership.

In a post on the McKinnon CC Facebook page, current president Jill Watts paid tribute to Pullman and his legacy: “Rick’s steadfast commitment, exemplary leadership and passion for the club have left a legacy that will be treasured by all who had the privilege of working with him and calling him a friend. His tireless contributions – especially his two decades of nurturing and guiding young players – have shaped the club in countless ways. His spirit will continue to inspire us for years to come.”

Pullman’s funeral will be held at 10am on Tuesday 21 October at WD Rose, Brighton East, Melbourne.

The ASTMA sends its condolences to the Pullman family (wife Christine, sons Adam and Alex and their families) and the Advanced Seed team at this difficult time.
