The ASTMA has been saddened to learn of the recent passing of Stephen Bernhard (pictured). The founder of grinding equipment manufacturer Bernhard and Company, he passed away peacefully at the age of 79. Bernhard and Co. made the announcement on their website, saying that his passing was a profound loss, but that “his legacy would endure in their people, purpose and in every blade of grass his work helped to perfect”.
“Stephen was much more than a founder – he was the heart and soul of Bernhard and Company,” the announcement read. “His vision, energy and values continue to shape every aspect of the business today. From the way we innovate to the way we work with our partners and customers, Stephen’s influence is ever-present.
“With an unwavering passion for excellence, Stephen built Bernhard and Company from the ground up into a world leader in turf technology. His curiosity and drive to improve standards across the turf industry have helped professionals worldwide deliver better turf and elevate their careers and businesses.
“Education was at the centre of Stephen’s philosophy. The Bernhard Academy stands as a lasting testament to his belief in sharing knowledge and opening doors for others. His commitment to helping people develop – both personally and professionally – touched so many lives and remains one of his most powerful legacies.”
Bernhard had a more than 25-year involvement with the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA). In 2008, he received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade, while at this year’s BTME (the UK’s annual conference) he received BIGGA’s Outstanding Contribution Award in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to supporting and improving the industry that he so much loved.
During his career he also made numerous trips to Australia representing the company and presented at a number of conferences (including the 2013 Twin Waters pictured) in both Plenary and Technicians Stream sessions.
Beyond the accolades, Bernhard will be most remembered for his humility, kindness and deep respect for the people who make the turf industry what it is. One who can certainly vouch for that is ASTMA events and education manager Simone Staples who remembers Bernhard fondly not only as a conference presenter but friend.
“I vividly remember him at the Twin Waters conference in 2013 walking up the ramp and giving me a hug saying it was from my daughter Caitlyn who was studying in London at the time,” recalls Staples. “He was her emergency contact while she was over there and would check in on her from time to time to make sure she was doing okay. He was such a lovely man and will be greatly missed.” The ASTMA sends its condolences to Stephen's family and Bernhard and Company for their sad loss.
