The ASTMA is currently calling for nominations for its annual awards, with applications closing Wednesday 30 April. Over the coming weeks we will put the spotlight on these awards and encourage members and the wider industry to nominate a club, facility or an individual that is deserving of recognition. This week, we highlight the Claude Crockford Sustainability and Environment Award, proudly sponsored by Platinum Partner Syngenta.
Named in honour of Claude Crockford, famed superintendent of Royal Melbourne Golf Club from 1937 to 1975, this award celebrates his legacy in golf course environmental management. His commitment to sustainable practices continues to inspire the industry. This award recognises turf managers and facilities for their dedication to sustainable land management, long-term environmental planning, community involvement and overall environmental stewardship. With sportsfields, grounds and golf courses facing increasing public and legislative scrutiny, environmental management is a top priority for today’s sports turf managers.
In 2024, it was Teven Valley Golf Club superintendent Paul Gumbleton who joined a strong list of Claude Crockford Award recipients. Teven Valley became the third NSW golf club to win the accolade over the past decade, following the likes of Eastlake Golf Club in 2021 and Muirfield Golf Club in 2017.
It was back in 2016 when Gumbleton (pictured top with Syngenta’s Paul Jackson) left his job as superintendent of Monash Country Club in Sydney’s northern suburbs to chase a dream. In what was a highly ambitious project, Gumbleton, together with Teven Valley owner Curt Zuber, had a vision to transform a small, run-down, regional nine-hole layout into one of the most sustainable golf courses possible.
Over a three-year period Gumbleton, together with former Kingston Heath assistant superintendent Bob Simmons, helped to renovate the special parcel of land into one of the most-talked about nine-hole courses in the country, introducing a raft of environmentally sustainable practices and infrastructure along the way.
